I am dreaming of …a mural in downtown Sevierville.

I am dreaming of a… mural in downtown Sevierville!

Murals and public art are a great asset to any town or city. DB Photography, some friends and I did a photo shoot a few months ago called “The 10 Most Instagrammable Spots in Downtown Sevierville” and we talked about the popularity of murals in pictures for social media. Here is a link to that story if you missed it:

https://outandaboutinsevierville.com/2017/10/08/the-most-instagram-worthy-spots-in-downtown-sevierville/

Why would a mural be good for our town? Here are some reasons.

  1. Large scale art like murals give a special vitality to a downtown area.

IMG_7865 4

This is the “What Lifts You” mural by Kelsey Montague in the Gulch neighborhood of Nashville. It incorporates drawings in the wings that are uniquely Nashville and country music. (Can you find the guitars and cowboy hats in the picture.)

IMG_7613 2

This is the line of people waiting to take a picture with the mural. A phenomenon about this piece of art? Every single person looks good in their picture. Check Instagram and do a search with “What Lifts You” to see what I mean. It is special. There are lot of restaurants in this area so it draws a crowd and helps boost their economy.

2. Large scale public art is accessible to anyone. You do not have to go into a museum or building to access it. You can just walk up to it on the street. DB Photography owner, Danyelle Bledsoe, states that we can enjoy the art as just a simple passer by.

IMG_6910 2

3.  The appeal is multi-generational.

IMG_8745 5

IMG_8725 2

4. Certain kinds of murals and large scale art add a ‘cool’ aspect to photos to post on social media. If you want to draw young people to your area then this will do it. The photo below has been a profile picture on Instagram.

IMG_6869 2

5. Foot traffic = a boost to the economy in that area. We had dinner at a local restaurant and then walked to this area after dinner to take pictures. It was our secondary destination.

6.  Murals turn big walls into amazing canvases.

7. Murals and large scale art make wonderful backgrounds for family memories.  (Photo by DB Photography).

img_7222-2.jpg

8.  Murals and large scale art bring attention to a building or structure. An ordinary parking garage suddenly becomes enchanting.

IMG_3710 2

9.  Murals and public art give photographers and models great backdrops for photos—which, in turn, gives more publicity to that spot in a city. This is a fabulous Senior picture for a local student taken in Knoxville because there are no places like this yet in Sevierville. (Photo by DB Photography).

10. Murals and large scale art give important work to artists. Furthermore, they can  leave a positive, lasting impact on that area.

11.  Murals add a special interest visually to an area. Danyelle Bledsoe of DB Photography says that large scale art and murals “lend to motion and movement. They offer a variety of focal points in an image.”

The image above yields different results every time. It is an outstanding piece of public art.

12.  DB Photography owner, Danyelle Bledsoe, says that murals allow us to combine art forms of both paint and photography—all in one place.

13.  There is both beauty and power in public art. It gives special character to an ordinary wall. It makes you want to go there and spend time around there.

IMG_8747 2

14. Murals and public art can add atmosphere to celebrations. Happy graduation, Class of 2017. We had a party of 12 for this event so the restaurant benefitted greatly by having these murals easily accessible to our group and by us choosing to celebrate there.

15. Murals can be decorative, make a statement, or mark an important event. The mural above pays homage to the musical history of Knoxville. It can be found on South Gay Street. IMG_1086 2

I like the statement made by this artist and mural found in Greenwich Village, New York.

Where would be a good place for a mural in downtown Sevierville?

While wandering downtown for the photo shoot, we came across the perfect place for a mural. It is the wall pictured in the first photo in this story. It is across the street from the drive- thru of the old Sevier County Bank location, just off of Court Avenue. We looked at this wall and thought it would be a perfect place for a mural or public art.

Advantages?  This wall is visible from the street, but not completely. There is a parking lot across the street and it is only yards away from the Dolly Parton Statue—the most popular place downtown. It is neutral color and a canvas just waiting for a large scale painting. There are three restaurants, two art studios, and two barbershops within a block of this location. They would all benefit from more foot traffic and visitors downtown.

Here is the picture again.

IMG_0619 2

What would a mural look like there?

With a little imagination, DB Photography gives us some fun ideas to begin with. IMG_3713

Would it look like this?

IMG_3715

Or this?

IMG_3714

Or this?

Or maybe something completely different. Mountains, native plants, wildlife, or something that captures the great spirit in this area. Whatever the focus, it would surely be decided by the city of Sevierville, with input by the Sevierville Commons Association and the Sevierville Commons Arts Council. But whatever the mural turned out to be, it would surely be special to this area.

With that being said…we are dreaming of a mural in downtown Sevierville!

The Most Instagram-Worthy Spots in Downtown Sevierville

IMG_0734

Whether you are a tourist wanting a picture with the Dolly statue or a local who is spending some time downtown, there are some ‘Instagram worthy’ places to find in in the center of Sevierville. This blogger teamed up with DB Photography, a Sevier Commons board member and an Instagram savvy downtown worker to find the best places to go. Here is our list of the most Instagram-worthy spots downtown.

SITES

THE DOLLY PARTON STATUE

IMG_0644

Without a doubt, the statue of Dolly Parton is the most photographed spot in downtown Sevierville. You can drive by almost any time of day to find people taking pictures with the statue of our favorite native, Dolly Parton. She is loved by audiences all over the world so there are sure to be some fans at the statue, especially on weekends. In fact, I saw five cars stop during our photoshoot that Sunday with visitors from Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas. Find this special place on Court Avenue in front of the Sevier County Courthouse. The statue always seems to say “Welcome to downtown Sevierville!”

THE SEVIER COUNTY COURTHOUSE

IMG_0654

While at the Dolly Parton statue, you should consider a photo of the Sevier County Courthouse due the bell tower, curved windows, brick, and other attributes. I have taken pictures of it during different times of day and various seasons. Clouds and the sky contrast well with the dark brick and bell tower. I always find it interesting.

THE CROSSWALK IN FRONT OF THE COURTHOUSE

IMG_0648

This photo taken on the crosswalk in front of the Sevier County courthouse is a fun replica of the Beatles Abbey Road album cover. If you want this shot then you better visit on Sunday when there are few cars parked downtown to ‘clutter’ your shot. The courthouse gets busy during the week, especially on Fridays.

IMG_0652

Or you can take a photo from this view of the crosswalk. The lines make an interesting frame for the model. In addition, the pretty flowers, plants and doorway in the background lend interest. Yes, crosswalks are good for Instagram photos!

DOORWAYS ON COURT AVENUE

IMG_0626

Across the street from the Sevier County courthouse, you will find a block of buildings with interesting characteristics. For example, several offices have interesting doorways and windows. Fashion bloggers often use doorways to frame their shots so anything curved or out of the ordinary is a good bet for an interesting photograph for an Instagram shot.

IMG_0628

This doorway is simple yet interesting with the three steps and contrasting color on the doors.  Find this doorway across the street from the Sevier County Courthouse.

COURTHOUSE DONUTS

IMG_0631

A favorite downtown gathering place is Courthouse Donuts at 160 Court Avenue. The bench is not just for resting, but for for posing for social media pictures. You get a bench, pretty windows, flags, flowers, and buildings all in one shot. The windows of Courthouse Donuts always display work from local artists; therefore, it is one of the best places downtown to take a picture. Just across the street from the courthouse, Courthouse Donuts also offers refreshment and a nice morning vibe. You can relax with a coffee and have one of the best donuts in Tennessee. Or stay for lunch. The building is lovely inside. Go take a look!

D GARDEN

IMG_0638

D Garden is just a few doors away Courthouse Donuts and offers the most lovely view on Court Avenue. This wonderful ‘floratique’ has several windows and a doorway that are more than Instagram-worthy. In addition, one can hear music playing softly in the background of the entrance, making you want to linger. Take a closer look because this space has a bit of history inside.

IMG_0657

The front door of D Garden is just as lovely. Look at the small chandelier overhead. You are ready for a great photo at D Garden on Court Avenue because it is dressed up and ready to go! Find the website at  www.dgardenfloratique.com

With the picture above, you can see that D Garden has the most beautiful door and exterior in downtown Sevierville.

THE VICTORIA MALL ARCADE PASSAGEWAY ON COURT AVENUE

IMG_0621

This is what the British call an arcade, or a passageway, from Court Avenue to the back parking lot of Sevier County Bank and the gazebo area. You can take some interesting pictures here due to shadows and lighting. Give it a try! The Southern Fried Hair salon is on the left and the Cause and Effect store is on the right.

THE ALLEY ON COURT AVENUE

IMG_0618

This alley is near D Garden and north of the courthouse. It is rather long and interesting. The wood side contrasts with the brick. Your imagination is the limit for this Instagram worthy shot.

IMG_0616

The wood side of the alley makes a nice neutral background for portraits. Beautiful!

THE WALL BEHIND THE FORMER SEVIER COUNTY BANK LOCATION

IMG_0619

Continue walking toward Main Street then take a right to find this wall behind the old Sevier County Bank building. Why is this shot Instagram-worthy? Any color will stand out from the neutral background color of the wall. Observe how the blue denim color in the dress ‘pops’ in the foreground of this shot. See an upcoming blog on my website for the ideas we had for this wall.

THE OLD EMERY 5 & 10 SIGN

22219307_10208256227238202_1312256035_o

For a nostalgic photo, take one with this Emery 5 & 10 sign. To find it, continue past the wall behind the former Sevier County Bank building. You will find it to the right, on the back of the building. DB Photography can do special effects to intensify elements in a photo. Can you see them here?

THE OLE SMOKY MOONSHINE OFFICE

IMG_0634

This business is decorated and ready for your photo shoot downtown. In fact, it was one of the most festive places that we found downtown last week. Ole Smoky is ready for fall!

BISTRO 109

IMG_0608

Go back to Courthouse Donuts then turn left on Bruce Street. Across the street you will see one of our favorite lunch and dinner spots, Bistro 109. The exterior affords a nice picture with nice windows, lights, and plants. Go inside and take a picture of the beautiful copper bar and piano. The interior of the restaurant has many Instagram-worthy spots so take a look. After all that, I recommend the cranberry chicken salad and a beverage of your choice. It is one of my favorite places to eat in town.

THE CHERRY PIT

IMG_0607

The Cherry Pit is close to Bistro 109. The exterior is interesting so we stopped for a look. The window contains some pretty things as well. Wear blue to stand out amidst the red and white at this location.

THE BRICK ALLEY ON BRUCE STREET

IMG_0610

This was next to the old bus depot and buses actually used to drive through this alley. It is hard to believe because it looks so narrow. There are unlimited ideas for this photo spot.

THE OLD JAILHOUSE CELL BARS

IMG_0612

I once heard a story during a history walking tour downtown about the old jail burning down. In an effort to re-use materials, they made a sewer grate from the old jail house cell bars. You often find interesting shots on Instagram using flooring or the ground. There are also shots called ‘flatlays’ where one takes a photo looking down at objects. This one would be a conversation piece. Go to the back of the Bruce Street brick alley to find this interesting piece of Sevierville history.

CHAROTTE’S BRUCE STREET CREATIVE

IMG_0615

Continue up the street to Charlotte’s Bruce Street Creative for an attractive window scene. This one is dressed in our favorite colors: orange and white. Go Vols!

Enter Charlotte’s Creative to see beautiful jewelry and art. You may sign up for a class sometime. The interior is an artist’s dream.

If you are impressed with these photos, the business card for DB Photography is pictured above. Danyelle Bledsoe is my official photographer for special events.

THE SEVIER COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM

IMG_0596

I remember when this building used to be the post office. It was hard to find a parking space during certain times of the day when one needed to buy stamps. Now, the building serves as the Sevier County Heritage Museum. The brick and white treatments combine to make a nice picture. Thus, it makes our list of the most Instagram-worthy places in downtown Sevierville.

IMG_0592

This is the grassy area beside the Sevier County Heritage Museum.

CASH HARDWARE

22279319_10208256158236477_243860205_o

Yes, you read that correctly. Cash Hardware! I would not have thought of using that spot but Sara, our Instagram savvy friend, pointed out that the panels almost matched the color in my shirt. Color co-ordination is important for social media fashion bloggers so we tried the shot to see what it would look like. Not bad!

THE GAZEBO ON BRUCE STREET

IMG_0602

Danyelle caught the gazebo from a beautiful angle here. There are many more in the gazebo area. Visit the farmer’s market here during the summer or ‘Music in Common’ performances on Friday nights this month, October 2017.

IMG_0601

Here is a trick—try to match the courthouse bell tower with the one on the sign. There are some beautiful plants and baskets downtown this year and they have not gone unnoticed. The city landscaping department has really done an excellent job this year.

In case you missed it, here is the info for our photographer, who owns DB Photography. This blog story would not have existed without her skillful photography and posing suggestions.

Here is a link to her Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/dbphotographysevier/

Many thanks to our models who helped to give this story  life. They were willing to try anything to make the story work and are devoted to the revitalization of downtown Sevierville. You can too—come downtown and visit!

This blogger, DB Photography, a Sevierville Commons member and an Instagram savvy downtown worker enjoyed this photoshoot and we have ideas for more in the future. These photos present just a few ideas for Instagram-worthy spots in downtown Sevierville; however, there are probably many more. What are your favorite picture spots downtown? Let me know. There could be a Part II !

In the meantime, we’ll see you out and about in Sevierville.

Formal Treasures, From the Heart

Proms, weddings, cruises, Derby parties, debutante events, and more…Treasures From the Heart has a dress for you. Located at 230 Court Avenue, Treasures From the Heart is only a block or so from the Sevier County courthouse and very walkable from downtown. In fact, it was quite busy on Saturday. Here is the story about our photo shoot to highlight the beautiful dresses at this special store.

I made my first visit to Treasures From the Heart last August at the behest of my friend Elaine, a volunteer on Fridays. She told me that it is the only thrift store in town from which all funds benefit citizens in Sevier County. The store was extremely nice and I was impressed with it all. One thing caught my attention though—the collection of beautiful special occasion dresses! I had seen an article in the Mountain Press last year about these special dresses and remembered it immediately. Elaine said that some ladies in town would come to buy a dress for a cruise there because the prices were so good and they may only wear it one time. Most prices that I saw were under $30.

Now that spring approaches, there will be all kinds of special occasions to attend so you need to know about the ‘formal treasures, from the heart’ at this store. I asked a  friend, Danyelle Bledsoe, who is also a local photographer, if she could help me. Owner of DB Photography, Danyelle donated her time and expertise to benefit Treasures From the Heart, capturing the beauty of the special occasion dresses on Saturday. Many thanks to her for donating her time and expertise.

We had a great time. Here is what we found last Saturday.

First, it became quickly obvious that there were a lot more nice dresses than I was expecting so we improvised with three models from three age ranges: teenager, young adult, mature lady with style. The two dressing rooms are very good so we were able to set up quickly. Danyelle styled and posed all the shots and it was so much fun. She is truly talented!

You need to try things on that are not your size because there were a lot of surprises. Most ladies know that sizes are ‘relative.’ Different sizes depending on the maker and designer. For example, the dress above is actually a 14 and several sizes above what I wear now, but the jacket tied and made it fit almost perfectly. I didn’t want to take it off! Shoes by Capezio. So experiment with sizes. You will be surprised.

img_3573

Loved this one! We called it the ‘show stopper!’ It won’t be there long so act quickly!

img_3572This dress was so comfortable. Some lady will feel like a queen in this one.

A dropped waist, elegant black gown. Looks like an Instagram fashion blogger shot.

img_3597

We fell in love with this gown. Danyelle said that it looks vintage. Divine!

img_3596

And there are more! There were too many to try on in one day. Go try them yourself. You will have a great time looking at everything. I advise bringing friends to help.

Before we left, we looked at the wedding dresses and were amazed. They are in pristine condition. One was only $98 compared to thousands that some people will pay.

This one is so regal!

The train on this dress is several feet long. We discussed how it could be a dress on “The Bold and the Beautiful” or “Young and the Restless” on daytime TV.

Jewelry! This was lovely.

img_3589

And shoes.

img_3570

You can find formal and special attire all here at Treasures From the Heart.

Great things happen when you collaborate. Danyelle took wonderful photos, styled them, and came up with the name for this blog story as well. The photoshoot was great fun so I can only imagine the excitement when DB Photography does a photo shoot at an outdoor setting, such as the covered bridge or the Smoky Mountains. She is very relaxed and comfortable to work with. I will hire her some day for real. Here is her contact info again.

When shopping out and about in Sevierville, don’t forget Treasures From the Heart at 230 Court Avenue,  the former location of Carl Hatcher’s store. It is full of surprises and well worth the trip! Treasures from the heart.
