Perfect Weather for a Farmers Market : June 14, 2019

It was only 70° as I parked at the lot on Main Street and Court Avenue to go to the downtown Sevierville farmers market. With those temps, I knew that it would be a special day to enjoy the market without all the usual heat. What a nice day it turned out to be!

IMG_7336

The entrance to Court Avenue is lovely. The Department of Parks and Recreation deserves compliments for their hard work. This spot is lovely.

IMG_7343

Did you realize there are brochures for a downtown self-guided walking tour?

IMG_7386 2

The flags were out for Flag Day.

First, I stopped for a coffee at the Crust and Crumb on Bruce Street. Next, a friend met me for lunch. After that, we strolled to the farmers market around 12:30 to catch the last 30 minutes.

IMG_7351

My first stop was the table by the Sevierville Commons Arts Council. Pictured left to right are Marilyn Davenport, Crystal Lynn, and Elizabeth Cole.

IMG_7352

So many beautiful things at the Sevierville Commons Arts Council table.

IMG_7354

Art is alive and well downtown. We can look forward to some upcoming ‘make-it-and-take-it’ classes soon.

IMG_7356

Ham and Goodys is famous for their cookies and many customers have made a drive to Knoxville to get these treats.

IMG_7357

Rather than individual cookies, Ham and Goodys sells them by the dozen. I chose an assortment to take to my father for Fathers Day. The Ham and Goodys people said that customers were waiting when they arrived at the Sevierville farmers market in the morning! Yes, I can believe that.

IMG_7360

I sometimes buy soap from this vendor, but suddenly developed a thirst and had a refreshment instead. What wonderful lemonade! Make sure that you look for this young entrepreneur next week! Great lemonade!

IMG_7362

The Sevierville Fire Department brought a beautiful old fire engine and we wanted to go for a spin.

IMG_7364

Sevierville’s finest are at the farmers market to answer questions and offer help to the community.

IMG_7368

The downtown Sevierville farmers market is a good opportunity for families to shop or work together. The food sold here is the best of the summer!

IMG_7370

This is one of my favorite vendors: Sevier Blumen. I bought some Zinnias for my dining room table and they are beautiful.

IMG_7450

The bouquets are a delight for the senses.

IMG_7375

Who can resist beautiful flowers?

IMG_7379

Don’t forget to bring a shopping bag to the farmers market!

IMG_7391 2

Soon, it was closing time for the market so I wandered down Bruce Street toward my car. A wonderful smell was coming from Graze Burgers and I could hear music coming from their outdoor patio. The sounds and smells always entice me to come over for  a while.

IMG_7389

Every time that I go downtown, Graze Burgers beckons with sounds and the aroma from the grill. So nice.

IMG_7390 2

I hope to visit the Graze Burger outdoor patio soon. They are ready to serve you.

IMG_7392 2

Currently, the construction was happening at the upper end of Bruce Street. This is needed to install underground utilities and new water lines.

IMG_7338

As I walked to my car, I could see work going on for the new lofts going in downtown on Main Street. Perhaps that will be a future post when we are out and about in Sevierville.

Creative Theater Production of “Annie” Made Us Fall in Love with Theater Again

We went to see the production of  “Annie” at the Creative Theater in Pigeon Forge and it made us fall in love with theater all over again. I had seen pictures and good reviews on social media of this production, but was even more impressed after seeing it with my own eyes. Take someone special there this week because the performances are wonderful. Now, I will tell you seven reasons why I enjoyed the performance and why you need to see “Annie” this week.

IMG_6938

1. The Personal Connection

I was initially interested in seeing the production with my sister and her family because the young actress in the lead role is good friends with my niece. They are in the same class together at school in Morristown. We had to come and support her talented best friend!

IMG_6942

And we love dogs! What a cute pup for the role of ‘Sandy.’

IMG_6944

The screenshot above shows the four shows  left this week. IMG_6956 2

2. The Quality

This musical was a hit in 1977 and it is a hit now in Pigeon Forge. I expected a good performance; however, the production set a high standard—and met it. I forgot that I was not in Knoxville, Nashville, Atlanta, or even the theater district in NYC. Acting and voices were wonderful. Costumes were beautiful (or beautifully shabby in the case of the orphans) and the sets were so interesting. Part of the fun of the show is when you see the stage changed from one scene to the next. It is fun to see the change.

IMG_6959

We bought tickets in the balcony and were ready for the show to begin by seven o’clock.

IMG_6972

As you can see, the theater is a nice size with a main floor and a balcony. You can also see the stage and how they change the sets.

IMG_6960

If you sit in the balcony, the safety rail will be in your line of sight, but you get used to it. After a minute, your eyes will be riveted to the stage below.

IMG_6974

3.  The Music

Everyone knows at least two songs from this musical: “Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow.” You will want to sing along and may recognize a few more tunes. In the photo above, the ‘orphans’ were adorable and everyone hit their marks. The young actors kept the pace lively.

IMG_6980

4. Nostalgia and History

This was one of my favorite scenes in the show for several reasons. First, I enjoyed seeing the group together and hearing the ‘Cabinet’ sing. Second, the actor portraying Franklin Roosevelt was so authentic in his portrayal that FDR seemed to ‘come back to life’ in 2019. Third, I knew that they invited a guest to do a cameo for the evening, but didn’t know when he would appear. Follow Creative Theater on Facebook and you will know who to expect in the cameo each day. Our cameo actor for the evening  is pictured above, second from the right.

img_6941.png

I know that he had so much fun!

IMG_6970

The musical takes place during the Great Depression so the audience will see historical and cultural references that bring back memories. The radio show and commercials did that for me. The poor people walking in the city reminded us of the hard times during the Great Depression. Presidents were mentioned, like Hoover and FDR. The portrayal of the president was perfection.

5.  Feelings

A good stage production will make you think and it will evoke feelings. “Annie” did both for me.  I found myself smiling during most of the production. I smiled. I tapped my feet and hummed. Surprisingly, a tear even came to my eyes during the first playing of the song “Tomorrow.” It must be the most well known tune from the show, with a theme of optimism in spite of life’s battles. If you listen to the words and think of someone fighting a battle right now then you may also fight back a tear as well.

6. Red Carpet Picture

I had seen a friend post a special picture on Facebook where they looked like they were on a red carpet, standing under a movie marquee. My niece and I found the spot during  the 15 minute intermission and were able to take a picture with ‘Sandy,’ the dog. There was no charge, just a suggestion to show it on social media in order to help publicity.

IMG_6968 5

This was a wonderful souvenir and we were delighted. What a special touch to an already special event! Make sure that you take your camera/phone and do this by the end of intermission.

IMG_6985

The second act will fly by too quickly so enjoy it!

IMG_6993 2

I love the curtain call at the end of a play when the actors are recognized for their work.

IMG_6998

What wonderful young performers!

IMG_7001 2

These were formidable actors in sinister/comedic roles.

IMG_7003

Miss Hannigan was superb!

IMG_7005 2

Ron Solomon played Oliver Warlocks perfectly and had a wonderful singing voice. It was a pleasure to witness his scenes. Laura Taliferro played a kind Grace Farrell, secretary to Warbucks. I felt transported by her voice as well. She truly had a wonderful aura about her that surpassed the stage.

IMG_7012 2

A standing ovation for Jennie Marie Davis and the entire cast of “Annie!”

7.  Meeting the Cast

I have never attended a performance where you could meet the cast after the show. You will get to do that at the Creative Theater and it is magical!

img_7027.jpg

The lead actress celebrates with classmates and home town friends from Morristown.

img_7022-2.jpg

These three actors really ‘chewed up the scenery’ and made their marks on the musical. Marvin West was excellent as the policeman and FDR. You forgot that he was in character because it seemed so real. The audience could not control their laughter during the scenes with Jonathan Weathersby (Rooster) and Turner Morris (Lily St. Regis). I will not give away that scene, but it was the high point of the comedy for us. So funny!

IMG_7030

Don’t be shy! During the ‘meet and greet’ after the show, congratulate the actors and get a picture to remember the show. I always wanted my picture with another president!

IMG_7031

We left the theater and walked out to our cars, thinking about what a fantastic show that we had just witnessed in our own county. There are different kinds of theaters here, but this one is quite special. It is a community theater that allows community member to take part in productions and to try different aspects of the stage. It can help teach beginners while letting veterans shine!

Growing up in Morristown, we would go see performances at the Morristown Theater Guild. In fact, I first saw “Fiddler on the Roof” there and have never forgotten it. It was magical. In the same sense, I truly enjoyed the performance of “Annie” at the Creative Theater and am thinking about going again this week. Make sure you see this show while you still have a chance. It is amazing theater and made us fall in love with it all over again.

You will too!

Two Coyotes Studio in Downtown Sevierville

One of my favorite places in downtown Sevierville is the Two Coyotes Studio. I like to drop by and browse the art and jewelry. In fact, I have bought several gifts and earrings for myself at this business. Also, it is just fun to chat with the owner/artist, Bev Gwinn Jones. Come along with me to visit this little treasure tucked away upstairs on Court Avenue.

IMG_6822

If you are looking in this direction then you are very close to the studio entrance. Check the Facebook page (included further in the article) to be aware of current hours. She is busy teaching classes in the summer!

IMG_7182

IMG_6824

The door is to the right of D Garden Florique.

IMG_6826

The door is to the left of Southern Fried Hair. Now, you have found it on Court Avenue.

IMG_6827

Walk in the door and you will be directed up the stairs.

IMG_6828

It looks like a lot, but it you will be at the top in seconds.

IMG_6829

When you are close to the top of the stairs, you will see some pretty things!

IMG_6830

Everything will catch your eye!

IMG_6832

If you like jewelry, especially earrings, then you are in the right place.

IMG_6833

I love the visual presentation.

IMG_6834

So many pretty things!

IMG_6845

Bev Gwinn Jones is the artist/owner of the studio. She has had an interesting career trajectory that has led her to downtown Sevierville. Originally from Knoxville, Bev lived in Gatlinburg during her college years, working at a plant store called “Plants and Other Healthy Things.” Later, she worked with the Record Bar, a chain of record stores in the southeast. You may remember the Record Bar in West Town Mall? She traveled a lot through Nashville, East Tennessee, and more during those years.

IMG_6840

I always must admire this photo in the Two Coyotes Studio. OK, I admit that I always go over to this photo to pay homage to one of my favorite music artists.

Here is a short version of the story behind the photo above. Bev moved to Texas and was working as  regional manager for a record store chain when a friend invited her to go to a Sting concert. Not only did she get to see a concert of a lifetime, but they also had backstage passes. There was a long ‘meet and greet’ line to see Sting, but it was all completely worth it! Bev will tell you the story. Apparently Sting was very pleasant and personable as they got to enjoy that moment. Bev says that she had two highlights of her music store career: meeting Sting and David Crosby. What luck!

IMG_6851

At the height of her music store career, Bev had 24 stores under her supervision. Eventually, she was able to move back with the company to Nashville and ended up in Sevierville to start her family.

IMG_6850

When I asked Bev why she named her studio “Two Coyotes,” she told me that it came from a time when she and her husband lived in Colorado. Coyotes are iconic animal figures in Colorado, much as bears are in our area. Bev said, “Coyotes mate for life and their nest is usually high on a mountaintop.” One can see the parallel and it is perfect.

IMG_6933

Bev created and sold her art in Sevierville as she raised her family. I borrowed this photo  from the Two Coyotes Studio Facebook page that shows her selling her creations on Bruce Street in 1992. Bruce Street was her first venue; later, she began doing arts and crafts shows.  Eventually, she settled into her Court Avenue location. Catch her studio link here https://www.facebook.com/BevGwinnJones/ .

IMG_6853Bev sells her creations at my favorite boutique in town: Loraleis. She also once sold them in a store that you may remember called the Common Good. Now, her creations are primarily sold in her own studio.

IMG_6837

I always find 10 things that I like on this display. Love the birdcage to display jewelry!

IMG_6849

I admired these necklaces. Beautiful color!

IMG_6858

Bev Gwinn Jones is busy creating art and teaching classes. Go to her Facebook page and click on ‘events’ in the left menu. She offers small group art camps for children in her studio. Also, she helps lead a drama camp at her church so check the Two Coyotes Studio Facebook page for times and dates. Here is the link

IMG_6931

A generous spirit, I personally know that Bev supports charities and fundraisers. The work pictured above has been commissioned for an upcoming charity event.

IMG_6857

One thing that is unique to this studio— you can design your own jewelry. There are no limits to what you can create at Two Coyotes Studio.

IMG_6863 7

I felt very attracted to this design when I realized that it reminded me of something…

IMG_6934

The flowers remind me of the cabi Primrose Dress. Love it!

IMG_6864 2

It is a visual pleasure to gaze at the creations in the Two Coyotes Studio.

IMG_3828

I learned about Bev and the studio from my good friend, Sheley. We have visited the studio together a couple of times, especially for Christmas shopping.

IMG_6935

And even ornaments! The store is so pretty that I used the photo above for an Instagram post last year.

IMG_6865

Bev Gwinn Jones is a talented artist with an interesting life and personal story. Her studio is so fun to visit and anyone can afford something there— some things just cost a few dollars. This artist supports downtown Sevierville and small businesses. In truth, Two Coyotes Studio is a downtown Sevierville treasure.

Check out some pretty things at Two Coyotes Studio when you are out and about in Sevierville.

New Vendor Treasures at the Sevierville Farmers Market: May 31, 2019.

IMG_6300

For the first time in a while, I was able to arrive early to the downtown Sevierville Farmers Market and linger. It was not very hot and turned out to be such nice weather. We were all ready for a stroll through the market.

IMG_6301

I drove down Bruce Street, but usually park in the public lot on Main Street and Court Avenue.

IMG_6302

I like this large sign on Main Street. You will pass it as you go on to Dolly Parton Parkway.

IMG_6304

Next, I like to turn left on Court Avenue and cut through the arcade. This is a good shortcut to the market from Court Avenue and the courthouse area.

IMG_6329

By 10:15, the market was bustling with activity.

IMG_6331

I started on the east (right side) of the market and ran into a new vendor who creates her own skin products. The table had such a pretty presentation.

IMG_6430

IMG_6334I always need lip balm so it was nice to be able to test the product right there. The vendor will give you a popsicle stick to make it easier. She uses essential oils in the beeswax so the balm is nicely smooth and soothing.

IMG_6455

When you can’t decide, just buy both choices!

img_6341.jpg

My sister Suzanne would like these T-shirts.

IMG_6431Sound Revue will provide music during June and it really adds to a festive atmosphere.

IMG_6343 2

A nice, clear sound invigorated the market from this Dandridge based D.J.

IMG_6347

Next, I found a new vendor who was raising money for a Gatlinburg non-profit.

IMG_6432

They have been gifted a super nice roaster, pictured in the upper left of the collage. The rescue group will give away roasted nuts for a donation—and $5 a bag is a bargain. I bought a bag and intend to use them on salads this summer.

IMG_6348

Samples are always a good idea at a farmers market so I was hooked after that. Very good!

IMG_6353

We talked about the animals currently in their care and the work done by the rescue group. Many are seniors and hard to adopt pets. I will try to donate to Hidden Hills Animal Rescue each week that I see them at the market. They hope to be there more this summer.

IMG_6352 2

Hidden Hills Animal Rescue features a ‘pet of the week’ in this local publication. You can see the web address above.

img_6356-2.jpg

It is always interesting to see what products are available from the Crust and Crumb.

IMG_6433

It was hard to walk by these pastries because they looked divine!

IMG_6365

Such nice temperatures in the low 80s.

IMG_6362 2

If there an anchor to the downtown Sevierville farmers market, then it would have to be the stand from Henderson’s Produce. I often shop at their store at 705 Eastgate Road in Sevierville, but the downtown market is even more convenient.

IMG_6368

By 11:00 a.m., it was time for me to meet a colleague for lunch at Courthouse Donuts. There was not a parking space to be found on Bruce Street— a good economic sign.

IMG_6369The new (and wildly popular) Graze Burgers restaurant was ready for lunch service. I am sure that it got busy by noon.

IMG_6434

Next time, I must schedule extra time for a coffee at Crust and Crumb on Bruce Street.

IMG_6374

Courthouse Donuts has the best windows downtown. Have a coffee and watch the traffic around the courthouse as you wait for your order.

IMG_6372

We had the blue plate special, a tuna melt, and enjoyed the view.

I welcome the Friday farmers market in downtown Sevierville and look forward to finding more treasures from the vendors. For summer, it must be one of the best ways to get out and about in Sevierville.

See you next Friday!
