Big Kickoff for New Sevierville Dairy Queen, November 2016

There has been much anticipation for the new Sevierville Dairy Queen and the wait is over. It opened this morning at 6:00 a.m. with a big promotion: free Blizzards all year (2 per month) to the first 100 people in line to buy a breakfast platter. Did I make the cut? Read on to see what happened this morning.

fullsizerender1

If there is another promotion like this then you may have to park in the Walmart Marketplace parking lot and walk over some curbs, dirt, and grass.

fullsizerender

I could see the line wrap around the back of the building. I didn’t feel good about my chances to be in the first 100 people.

I walked up to the first guy in line (after assuring everyone that I wasn’t cutting line) and asked him what time he arrived to maintain first place. He replied that he arrived  at 8:00 the night before and set up camp, which you can see above. He said that he had camped out once before for a Krispy Kreme promotion and won doughnuts for a year. The next guy in line arrived at 3:15 a.m. to take second place.

img_8542

Since I was already there, I counted people in line and found myself to be in the 70s, which made me eligible for free Blizzards for a year. So I thought, “why not?” I jumped in line at 6:00 a.m. and was in the door by 6:35a.m. img_8547

img_8551

img_8550

Will Connell, marketing manager from Murfreesboro, greeted customers and handed out a flyer for a new promotion next week. I’ll show you at the end of this blog. He said they have opened Dairy Queens in Seymour, Sevierville, and White House, Tennessee. There are 10% discounts for military, seniors, and students.

The counter was fast and efficient. They make breakfast to order so I got a number and it was brought out to me within two minutes.

fullsizerender

The coffee is excellent!!! Make sure you get a refillable ‘to go’ cup. You will want one.

Now here is the promotion for next Tuesday…but be aware that this one is different. It could be a little tricky for some people; therefore, I don’t expect the long line that I saw this morning.

img_8566

The first 100 customers must buy a DQ cake. Let me repeat…they must buy a cake. See the sizes in the small print above.

img_8560

Cake prices vary from $20-30. (I Googled the prices.) However, do the math and you will see that it is worth it. A combo meal varies from $4 to $6.50. You get two per month. For two people, it will be $8 to $13 multiplied by 12 months. That is certainly worth a cake and Thanksgiving is just two days away.

img_8558

I think that I will go back next Tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m. and predict that the primary school break room will have a DQ cake for lunch! It is a little early in the morning, but a fun way to invite a friend and get out and about in Sevierville all year.

See you at the new DQ!

Sevierville 7 Day Planner: November 12 – 19, 2016

Things start getting busier in Sevierville next week, plus more things approaching the holidays. Here are some fun happenings coming up in Sevierville to mark on your calendar. I am going to use screen shots because the information is excellent.

First, this just popped up on my Facebook feed. Everyone loves the Old Mill in Pigeon Forge. While not in Sevierville, it is only minutes away with great food, shopping, and photo opportunities. My favorite store is Sassafras so this looks like a ‘must do’ on Saturday. Red Velvet Fudge? Oh my…

IMG_2366.PNG

We are (finally) getting a new Dairy Queen across the street from Sevier County High School. Will you be in line early next Tuesday morning? Worth it!

img_2361

There is a cooking demo at KaTom next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. presented by the Executive Chef from Babalu Tapas and Tacos in downtown Knoxville. It is a fun place to eat so I can’t miss this class. Call KaTom at 865-225-1545 to RSVP.  Save me a seat near the counter!

Here is a link to the website. https://eatbabalu.com

fullsizerender

This event is more than a week away, but you need time to register and, perhaps, train for it. Get ready for the Thanksgiving Day 5K at Sevier County High School. The race this year, if I remember correctly, stays on the high school campus rather than out on the streets. The campus is quite large and will easily accommodate a 5K. You walk it or you can run it. Proceeds benefit Dr. Suzanne South’s science lab.

Go to the Foundation Facebook page and scroll down to learn more about the race and to see pictures of the science lab. The upgrades from previous fundraising have really made a difference so come and support the school.

https://www.facebook.com/SevierCountyHighSchoolFoundation/

fullsizerender2

This is what it looks like when you open Eventbrite to register for the race. Run and be home by 9:30 a.m. to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner! Don’t worry about the buffet lunch after this race.

fullsizerender3

(If you have an event that you want for me to share then send me an invitation or announcement via email or Facebook two weeks before the date. A month in advance would be even better.)

I see several fun events coming up at the end of the month and into early December so get ready to get out and about in Sevierville for the holidays!

Sevierville’s One-Stop Christmas Shopping last Saturday, November 5, 2016

fullsizerender

It was all hustle and bustle on Saturday morning at the 5th Annual One Stop Christmas Shopping in the Sevierville Civic Center. I had never been before and wanted to take a look since it was the fifth year in a row. I headed over around 10:40 a.m. and this is what I saw.

fullsizerender

Crowds gathering around tables to look at gift ideas.

fullsizerender

Local artist, Millie Derrick, displaying her pottery cups and bird houses in a unique stand!

These creations are so unique! I love looking at them every time that I see them.

img_8201

Her creations are so unique. I have never seen this technique in pottery. It is delightful!

img_8204

Millie has been selling her art at the Knoxville Farmer’s Markets for several years so her table is perfection!

img_8205

fullsizerender1

I finally had time to talk to my friend and colleague, Larissa, about her product. I’m going to give it a try this week!

img_8192

Loved looking at all the creative gifts.

img_8225

When I smell the wonderful aromas from Allison’s room it makes me want some for my home. My friend Crystal will help me out with that tomorrow. If you like Scentsy, tell me your favorite fragrance. I have it narrowed down to seven.

img_8229

img_8227

There were several vendors with wonderful treats. I encouraged them to consider signing up for the Downtown Sevierville Holiday Market on December 2 and 3. It will need lots of Gingerbread Men, especially after the Christmas parade on December 3rd.

If you see this lady then stop and have a chat. Karen has worked with the Barker Lounge for dogs, plus she manages the Bloomingtails Boutique downtown, proceeds go to Pets Without  Parents. img_8199

She has participated in the Sevierville Commons Farmers Market this summer. I bought an orange and white Vols necklace from her for a great price.  An even more cool reason to have a chat? She is from Australia.

fullsizerender

There were free treats for those who needed a refreshment.

This is located within the Bees Knees store. They are about to add more seating for lunch. Keep it mind!

On the way out of the building, it was fun to see two former students who are now working in city government. One is a Vice-Mayor, and the other, an Alderman. Good job, guys!

img_8237

There was a lot to see and shop on Saturday. I know that I’ll go next year too when I am out and about in Sevierville.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is now open for business.

img_8146The new Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is open—and it was packed with customers all day. I had to park in the side parking lot to get in. People are excited to see “good stuff cheap.” There were a lot of good deals. This is what I saw.

fullsizerender

The store is located in the former Food Lion space on Main Street, in the lot behind Hardees.

img_8145

I lose umbrellas every year so this was a nice sight in the entrance.

img_8146

If you own a K-cup coffee machine then you may want to check this out.

img_8151

I like the Bertolli brand. It was well within the range of the expiration date. The date was good.

img_8153

img_8162

I know some people who may like this game.

img_8161

I want to buy this and tape some sight words on them for practice.

img_8170

Lots of beautiful throws and other housewares.

According to the flyer in the newspaper, Ollie’s is a retailer for closeouts, salvage items, and ‘excessive inventory. ‘ There was a wide variety of goods to choose from. There was a huge crowd there this evening so this store should do very well here.

Hours are daily 9:00-9:00. Sundays 10:00-7:00.

I’ll post more pictures on the blog Facebook page for extra photos. Click this link to see more things at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.

Not your usual hamburger: BURGERFI

img_8108

It was later in the evening and we needed to stop somewhere before the movie. After hearing Christie and Katie describing it at lunch, I knew that we had to go to BURGERFI for a quick bite. Just on the left past Tanger Mall, you can get to Governors Crossing Theater in just 5 minutes—even with traffic. It was the first visit for Lisa, Melinda, and I to the restaurant. Here is what we saw..img_8112

I knew that the prices would be more than a typical fast food place, but was glad to see the sign above and so I didn’t mind it so much.

If you like the drink machine at Fire House Subs then BURGERFI drink machines will suit your fancy. I have avoided soft drinks and diet drinks for a while, but had one here in the name of research. If you choose Diet Sprite then you will have at least 8 possible flavors to add to your drink. Caramba!

fullsizerender2

Order in the back, get a ‘buzzer,’ then pick up on the left.

fullsizerender

I ordered a simple cheeseburger, but next time will try the CEO if someone will split it with me.  The ladies at lunch today insisted that this one is the best.  In my opinion, the prices are no higher than places in downtown Knoxville.

img_8126

The cheeseburger with a brand on the bun!

img_8125

There are several kinds of fries. These are the Parmesan kind. You have to share with someone! Trust me.

Wine and beer on tap.

img_8121

The biggest ceiling fan in town.

Now, I will try to clear up one point of confusion for some of us. I thought that the ‘FI‘ in the restaurant name indicated Wi-Fi, but it does not. You won’t get a WI-Fi password here. The menu has a slogan like ‘ the burgerfication of the country, one burger at a time;” to wit, the term ‘FI.’

Frank Allen’s Market is voted the Best Burger in Sevier County and I’ll stand by that. However,  if you want one later in the evening, then this is a good one to try.

Relay For Life Night of Hope, October 2016

img_7952

Relay for For Life of Sevier County and Harpoon Harry’s Crab House presented the second annual Night of Hope on Tuesday evening, October 25, 2016. This was my first Relay for Life event and it won’t be my last. Volunteers work hard in the fight against cancer so it is one of the most important causes that one could join. Here is what it was like.

Janice and I arrived at little after the 6:30 start time and got all the information from our hostesses. The main thing for me to learn— the raffle tickets. There were both live and silent auctions which were easy and fun. In fact, Janice later won horse statuette  for her granddaughter.

img_7947

The upstairs part of Harpoon Harrys can be open air in good weather. It was a great place for an event!

img_7961

A nice selection of gifts on the silent auction. I had my eye on the gift certificate from Oak Haven Resort, but let someone else get it (since I am already a monthly member there.) It was tempting!

img_7964

We heard the music of Stephen Goff playing as we entered the room. I remembered him from the October Art Happening in Downtown Sevierville. Must see him again soon! Find him on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/stephengoffmusic/

img_7966

Let me say that I have never eaten at Harpoon Harry’s before, but it was pretty incredible. Consequently, my girlfriends and I will now go there for our Christmas get-together since Janice and I get two votes. I have not heard of a ‘welcome table’ but it is the best idea of the year. To start the evening, this was the menu:

Sushi platter- various rolls

Fruit, veggie, cheese, & cracker trays

Peel and eat shrimp

Crab legs

 Cocktail crab claws

Cole slaw

Krab salad

Please know that this was the best spread of cuisine ever! The $50 ticket price stopped right here for me. There was a lot of seafood to enjoy!

img_7969

Seasonal decorations and the ‘dry ice’ effect in the glasses. Festive!

fullsizerender

img_7998

Kevin’s wife, Brooke Ownby, and her mother Louise Presley supporting Relay for Life of Sevier County .

img_8001

One of the auction items was a Palm Breeze Cruiser, donated by Cherokee Distributing Company. If there is another one next year then I must bid!

img_8006

This is part of the ‘Tuesday Night Sushi Group’ that meets at Harpoon Harry’s on Tuesday evenings. I must investigate this further some day. Pictured left to right: Fane Fisher, Eddie Fisher, Matt Converse, and Chuck Ottolini. They say that some of the sushi chefs here came from the former Shonos Restaurant in downtown Knoxville. You know that will be good. Save a place for me!

img_7990

Mayor Bryan Atchley gave a riveting talk about his experiences with cancer, both personally and with a loved one. It must have been harrowing. I can see where the Relay For Life group gives hope to those fighting the dreaded disease. We need to support them as much as possible.

img_8013

We joined the Tuesday Sushi Group and enjoyed the rest of the evening. They know sushi!

img_8030

The dinner buffet was ‘over the top.’

Tenderloin tips

Moonshine glazed salmon

Oven roasted chicken

Mashed potatoes

Rice

Baby Carrots

Corn

Green beans

Dessert: Ghirardelli Chocolate Brownie

In my opinion, the meal was worth double the ticket price that I paid. Unbelievable.

img_8009

Chocolate, anyone?

img_8024

Sophia Conerly, lead event Chair, making announcements. What a great job this team does. Their devotion to the fight against cancer is inspiring.

img_8010

img_8020

Who wants to play corn hole? These sets auctioned well.

img_8025

The drawings were fast paced and fun to watch.

img_8004

If I owned a cabin then these would be on my walls right now.

img_8026

Sevier County Bank supporting the Relay For Life Night of Hope. (My bank!)

img_8027

My favorite surprise of the evening—meeting Jim Bates, pictured here with Mayor Bryan Atchley. Jim Bates is the father of James and Jeremy Bates, S.C.H.S. alumni. He is visiting from Tampa. I heard Mayor Atchley introducing Coach Bates and had to meet him at the end of the evening. As an intro, I asked,”Are you James Bates dad?” So nice to meet him!

img_8028

Janice Sorrell and Jim Bates were teaching at S.C.H.S. at the same time. Janice said that she remembered that he was a young coach straight from U.T. (I won’t mention the year, but the school was very new then.)

img_8031

It was soon time to go. I noticed that the weather was still warm for late October as we passed by the open windows at Harpoon Harry’s Crab House. It was such an easy, relaxing, enjoyable event. It is a must-do event each year for me from now on.

The Relay For Life Night of Hope completely exceeded all expectations and I look forward to attending next year. In addition, I hope to do more to help this group in their efforts to fight cancer. Ultimately, the theme of the evening was bravery, dignity, and survival. They deserve everything that we can give them.

You can’t do any better when you are out and about in Sevierville…

New York Street Fair Culinary Extravaganza at WSCC: October 2016

There was a fun event last week produced by the Walters State Culinary Arts Department called “New York Street Fair.” I went after work to check it out and found it to be excellent! Here is what I saw there.

The picture above was a cute photo stop/ selfie station by the front door. Lots of fun little props to use for attendees. You start having fun at the front door.

First of all, there are more than 100 students in the Culinary Arts Program who contributed to the New York Street Fair last week. The event was a project based learning assignment where students planned menus, cost break downs of the meals, presentation, and ‘restaurant  facades,’ including cardboard food trucks on the back patio.

img_7558

Chef Joe Cairns, Chef Instructor for the Rel Maples Institute.  I believe he said that he was from Louisiana so he has a great background in good cuisine, as you can imagine.

img_7561

I don’t eat wheat or bread very often so I took it easy on the offerings. Here is a sample of a cornbread salad. Pretty good!

img_7563

Fried chicken and waffles—but the chicken is inside the waffle. There were several kinds of syrups for dipping as well. I wanted one so badly!

img_7564

Students can earn a two year degree in either hot foods or baking/pastry items. These pretzels looked great!

My friend Sheley would have been in heaven shopping in the bakery section.

There was a nice Thai restaurant with spring rolls and soup. Two thumbs up!

Luigi’s Italian Restaurant was very busy with pizza. Especially the Margherita pizza.

img_7582

Free samples!

fullsizerender

Finally, pie on a stick! I should have asked the technique so I could try it for Thanksgiving.

img_7583

The New York Street Fair was a fun happening for those seeking lunch or looking for something right after work, as I did that day. You pay $15 (lunch or supper) and get 15 tickets. I couldn’t use all mine and gave them to a family as I left. So you will have plenty to eat if you go next time. I didn’t even use 7 tickets.

The Walters State Community College Culinary Arts program is a jewel in the community. It has been training cooks, chefs, and restaurant managers for over 10 years.  was accredited by the American Culinary Federation in 2003, the first school in Tennessee to do so.

There are some big events coming up next month. Namely the Mountain Rose Thanksgiving Bakery on Tuesday, November 22 from 8:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m. You are sure to see my friend Sheley and others there!

It is certainly a tasty way to get out and about in Sevierville.

Sevierville 7 Day Planner: October 18-25, 2016.

Seven events in 8 days! Lots to see and do.

If you want me to share your event then the best way may be to send me an announcement via Facebook.

Three new events happen this Thursday.

Blue Moose won the War of the Wings last year. My sister, niece, and nephews love that place. $10 to sample the best wings in the county! Good luck to all teams.
Also Thursday, a 95th birthday party for Lorraine Hendricks will take place at Courthouse Donuts from 4-7:00 pm. Read the Sunday Mountain Press article by Stan Voit to learn her story more in depth. In brief, she was involved starting many valuable programs in our county, starting with the Boys and Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains. I feel like going to say ‘thank you’ too.

There were only a few seats left for this event tomorrow night so call soon if you are interested.

There are a lot of things going on to get us out and about in Sevierville.

Bama’s Million Dollar Band Practices in Sevierville: Saturday, October 15, 2016

img_7762

About 14 years ago, the band director for the Alabama Crimson Tide Marching Band (the Million Dollar Band) called Doc Ramsey to ask if they could use the football field to practice their halftime show before heading to the UT Knoxville football game. Doc said yes, unlocked the gates for them himself, and a new tradition was born. On home games against Alabama, you can go to the Smoky Bears stadium around 10:30 a.m. to see one of the best bands in the SEC.

I found out about the visit this year from Tabatha and Allison. Here is what I saw…

img_7738

Eight buses and at least one 18 wheeled equipment truck.

fullsizerender

The percussion section moving equipment down to the field. I counted over 6-8 xylophones.

img_7741

A view going in from the visitors section. The band covers almost half the field. I heard that there were over 450 band members this year.

Lunch was set up and ready to go from our local Chic-filet. Terry said that band members are extremely polite, eat quickly, and are ready to head over to Neyland Stadium.

img_7748

There was a lot of crimson and orange in the stands watching pieces of the show.

fullsizerender1

The legendary Doc Ramsey was at the top helping in the press box. He told me the story in the first paragraph above. He was the contact person for the Alabama band director years ago when this started.

img_7749

Majorettes are in front. Color guard in the back of the end zone.

img_7750

img_7754

View from top of Burchfiel Stadium.

img_7760

View from the very top of the stadium. I see the lunches waiting on the table in the left part of the picture. The mountains are beautiful in the background. Is that Mount Leconte? The bear statue is safe atop the SCHS gym.

img_7763

On my way out, I had to get a picture on the side of the equipment truck. That is quite a nickname!

img_7765

Finally, I ran an errand then waited along the parkway to see the famous motorcade that escorts the band out of town to the game. People told me that it is quite a sight. I waited quite a while. A long time. Then, I realized that the band must have left earlier than the. I gave up and drove home. As I got to the last red light on the way home, Allison texted that the band had just left. I was only about 10 seconds from turning off to my street from Chapman Highway when I heard a siren. An officer pulled around me and stopped in the intersection. I looked up into the rear view and saw the motorcade coming quickly toward me. It was a God moment because I had given up on seeing the motorcade. But He put his hand on it and placed me right in the middle. It was an amazing sight!

I jumped out my car with my IPhone (standing close to the car) and started taping the motorcade. Click this video to see what I saw! Exciting! (Keep volume down if you have dogs.)

Someone will probably notice how I jump into the car quickly when the second motorcycle officer comes speeding up behind me. Don’t try that if you find yourself in the middle of a motorcade. This was a fun and very different kind of morning to be out and about in Sevierville!

Final Downtown Sevierville Farmers Market of the Year, October 2016

With the first fall break ever, it was a free day to visit the last downtown Sevierville farmers market of the year. Sunny and 70 degrees made a nice day to end the market run for this year. First, I met Elaine, Janice, and Anita at Courthouse Donuts for coffee and a ‘catch up chat.’ Then we headed out to the market. Here is what we saw.

img_7687

Misty Benson transferred natural dye directly from plant to fabric. See the small, hammer- like tool used to lightly pound a fern leaf onto 100% cotton? Then use vinegar to ‘set’ the image so it won’t wash out.

img_7694

Guess what this design is from? A kudzu plant leaf.

img_7688

Also available were metalworking/blacksmithing gifts.

img_7703

Next artist, Andrea Wilson was pulling print etchings for this artist.

img_7700

Fun for kids at the downtown Sevierville Farmers Market!

img_7708

Artist, Kelly Sullivan, demonstrates pottery techniques.

Here are some of our farmers market vendors this year.

Marvin Henderson, from Sevierville.

Jackie Diaz lives in Sevierville now.

img_7717

Mike lives in Sevier County.

img_7718

Patsy lives in Sevierville. If you want to order some animal figurines as a holiday gift or something then her email is fgsaints@gmail.com . I am emailing her some pictures for gifts.

My friends and I headed back to Courthouse Donuts for lunch. Get a window seat so you can watch the comings and goings downtown. One friend said that the chef salad was excellent.

fullsizerender

Another friend ordered the chicken salad sandwich.  It is fabulous!

img_7720

Afterward, we walked a block to Treasures From the Heart to shop.

We looked at dresses first. Lots of nice ones there now. This one caught our eye.

img_7727

The ‘show stopper’ dress is still here!

img_7729

Of course, I checked out all the glassware again.

img_7724

It was a nice walk to the car after a day with friends out and about in Sevierville.

fullsizerender1

See you downtown at the Holiday Market on December 1st and 2nd. Stay tuned for more details forthcoming!
