Derby Hat Social 2017: Hang onto your hat! It is almost Derby time!

The United Way of Sevier County presented the Derby Ladies Hat Social on Thursday, April 6 at Courthouse Donuts for those who were interested in finding a beautiful ‘chapeau’ to wear at A Night at the Derby on April 28th. A ‘pop up’ hat shop was put into place for the hat social.  Derby finger foods and beverages were ready to serve at the event. My friends and I dropped by last year and ended up having a grand time at the hat social. This is what we experienced this year.

Beautiful hats from Sassafras were on display ready to be tried on and admired. Sassafras is our favorite store in the Old Mill area in Pigeon Forge. In fact, we always go there after dining at the Old Mill Pottery House. Everyone needs to go there! Here is a link to the store. http://www.old-mill.com/info/sassafras

Refreshments!

My friends and I knew from last year the best things to do at the hat social. Here is what you need to know if you want the best selection of hats. These are our recommendations!

  1. Arrive as soon as the event begins. Set your purses down on a table and go straight back to the hats. Wear a color that you may be wearing to the Derby event to help select the best hat.
  2. When you find a hat that you fancy, do not put it down! Keep it in hand and use the other hand to try on a few more hats. Try on many hats. Ask Donna Roland which one looks best and you will be sure to look good.

IMG_5854

Witness the ‘hat protection’ technique in this picture.

I didn’t select the hat I am wearing in this picture because it overpowered my features.  I eventually selected the white one in my hand. Donna Roland, pictured left, assured me that it was the one for me. Learn more about Donna Roland from her website. She is an expert in Sevier County on fashion. Her website it beautiful!

I loved Joan Saas and her April themed hat. What a festive touch she brought to the event!

Our friend, Sophia Connerly, found her hat quite quickly. Love it!

I admired this hat and Pat Willoughby carries it with panache!

All these ladies looked smashing. Loved the little one so much! She was delightful.

Karen found the perfect hat for her immediately.  She bought this one.

We attended A Night at the Derby last year and were quite impressed. That event, and the Hat Social, were two of my favorite things last year. Check my blog archives here to read  about the event last year. It is well worth the ticket price. In fact, you more than get your money’s worth—but, after all, it is a donation to the United Way of Sevier County. This organization helps over 15 organizations in our county, one of the most important charitable groups here.

See you at the Derby event on Friday, April 28th. It is a truly fun way to get out and about in Sevierville.

Art Happening Downtown Sevierville: February 23, 2017

fullsizerender

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council is off to great start in 2017 with Art Happenings downtown. They presented the first Art Happening of 2017 on Thursday evening and it was full of attendees from Sevier County, Maryville, and beyond. I arrived a few minutes late, but was in time to enjoy a nice event. Here is what I saw…

fullsizerender1

I walked in to see quite a crowd. In fact, the biggest crowd so far for an Art Happening in downtown Sevierville. The featured artist this month was Mary Ruden, an artist who is inspired by the natural world, particularly butterflies, orchids, and other flowers. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the American Botanical Society. She creates paintings, photography, and sculpture. This creation below was so beautiful that I had to touch it. Don’t tell.

img_3672

fullsizerender2

I was impressed with her banners that once hung in downtown Knoxville in the Arts District.

img_3660

Every table was full of attendees. I saw quite a few people that I knew so it was quite a lively evening.

fullsizerender4

Music was provided by Munson and Wear. When I walked in, they were singing a song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. One of my favorite groups! It was great and their music provided a nice ‘vibe.’

I like this painting called “Little Justice.”

Patsy Wallace, pictured right, came to hear her friend, Charlotte Wear. We enjoyed the musical entertainment and hope to hear them again very soon. More Tom Petty too!

There were no tourists around so I snapped a picture in peace; however, passersby probably thought that I was the tourist.

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council will install the next artist’s work next month and the next Happening is tentatively scheduled for April. Stay tuned to learn more!

Sevierville Commons Arts Council Holiday Market: Saturday, December 17th, 2016.

img_2535

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council ended a successful 2016 with the Holiday Market Christmas on Bruce Street. The day was chilly and festive. There was much to see and I left with some things to take home. Here is what I saw on Saturday.

I had only an hour for the market as I had to meet a friend in Knoxville for a special event later in the day. It was a quick day. First, I ran into my former classmate from Morristown West, Carol Bridgewater Rouse, who had come from Morristown to attend the market and to go to the Two Coyotes Studio to buy a special necklace. Carol is the art teacher at Morristown East and had seen Bev Guinn Jones’ necklace on my Facebook post. It is special and goes with our current situation after the wildfires in Sevier County. Here is another picture of it.

I hated to leave the Holiday Market on Saturday. I enjoyed it immensely.

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council deserves kudos and applause for their work this year invigorating our downtown. I just learned of them last spring and have followed their work since then. The Art Happenings, summer farmer’s market, Christmas on Bruce Street Holiday Market, and more, have made my life, and that of my friends, much richer. Consequently, they have had great impact in revitalizing downtown Sevierville this year. What a great job they have done in 2016. They are already planning things for next year. Next year, 2017 will be even grander. Stay tuned for more!

See you out and about in Sevierville…

Christmas on Bruce Street Holiday Market Today and Tomorrow

img_2535

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council presents Christmas on Bruce Street today and tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come see 30 local artists, find a special gift, and enjoy a special Christmas treat with friends downtown. From 11:00-3:00 p.m. you can go to the ‘make-it-and take-it’ station to create a special Christmas ornament to take home. It is free!

Today, I only had a few minutes after work to check out the holiday market. Despite the cold temps, there were a lot of good things there. Also, there are sure to be many more tomorrow. In fact, tomorrow should be very warm compared to today. It will be a great time to attend the downtown Holiday Market.

Here is what I saw today.

img_1272

Beautiful pottery was there today.

This promises to be a very good place to check out for snacks tomorrow.

I bought two bags of pork rinds. They are $5 per bag or two for $9. I got the bar-be-que, but there was also a regular bag to choose from. Very paleo and Adkins approved.

Arthur Young has a lot of very nice jewelry to choose from. I liked everything that I saw in his display.

My favorite animal sculptors will also be back tomorrow. The smaller figures are only $5. The bag contains some surprises for some people I know.

One special visitor will be especially popular in the gazebo!

A newspaper article said that Pets Without Parents volunteers will be there to help with wrapping presents ( make a nice little donation) and Move Dance Factory will drop by for a special performance. It will be the best way to get out and about in Sevierville tomorrow. See you there!

Sevierville Commons Arts Council Hosts Art Happening: December 8, 2016

img_1178

The courthouse was festive as I walked to Courthouse Donuts to see the Sevierville Art Happening last Thursday evening. As luck would have it, I was able to park right in front of the courthouse, with the event only steps away. Although I couldn’t stay long due to fighting off a cold, I was able to meet the artist and hear the best singing duo in East Tennessee. Here is what I saw at the Happening.

img_1179

It is always nice strolling by the windows of Courthouse Donuts to see the art on display. Warm and cheery inside.

img_1195

First, I ran into my friends Sheeley and Joey Rose. They had arrived earlier and were chatting with artists in attendance. We talked about the wildfires and quickly caught up with other December news.

Next, I saw the Pea Pickin’ Hearts singing at the front of the room. How nice to hear them again. Their harmonies really create a lovely, relaxed atmosphere.

img_1200

fullsizerender

I met the featured artist of the month, Crystal Lynn Sharp. Notice the canvas behind her has a special technique where it is gathered or ruched to add to the texture of the scene. I loved the colors too.

img_1212

Here is a side view of a painting so you see the folds more closely. I had never seen that done before! Multi-dimensional.

Sorry for the light reflections. I am trying to figure out how to manage them in photos. However, this summarizes Crystal’s professional background and techniques.

I hated to leave because I found out that more people arrived later who I really enjoy seeing. Hopefully, there will be no cold for me to fight off next time. The Sevierville Commons Arts Council will be sure to host many Art Happenings next year. It is one of my favorite ways to get out and about in Sevierville.

See you next time!

Sevierville 7 Day Planner: October 18-25, 2016.

Seven events in 8 days! Lots to see and do.

If you want me to share your event then the best way may be to send me an announcement via Facebook.

Three new events happen this Thursday.

Blue Moose won the War of the Wings last year. My sister, niece, and nephews love that place. $10 to sample the best wings in the county! Good luck to all teams.
Also Thursday, a 95th birthday party for Lorraine Hendricks will take place at Courthouse Donuts from 4-7:00 pm. Read the Sunday Mountain Press article by Stan Voit to learn her story more in depth. In brief, she was involved starting many valuable programs in our county, starting with the Boys and Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains. I feel like going to say ‘thank you’ too.

There were only a few seats left for this event tomorrow night so call soon if you are interested.

There are a lot of things going on to get us out and about in Sevierville.

Art Happening Downtown Sevierville, October 19, 2016

It was a nice evening downtown Sevierville at the third Art Happening, presented by the Sevierville Commons Arts Council. There were quite a few new faces at this event at Dyers Downtown. Music, art, snacks, presentation of the featured artist, and talks by Y-12 Credit Union and a representative from the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center completed the fast paced evening.

img_7618

Featured artist for October is Nelson Ziegler, a painter and artist who created the wood pieces featured at the top of this story. They were stunning! Ziegler is also an award winning watercolor and oil painter. He graduated from the Art Institute of Boston and Northwestern Academy of Watercolor. Below are some examples of his paintings.

As I was leaving, I noticed attendees outside looking at the window art and conversing with the artist who created them, Crystal Sharp.

People were standing outside enjoying nice temperatures and fresh air while enjoying conversation and paintings. This is what a great downtown can be. It is happening now. Our downtown is ‘on its way’ and the Sevierville Commons is driving this revitalization. As the picture below shows, the Sevierville Commons Arts Council is also helping to lead the way.

img_7685

The Sevierville Commons Arts Council will be planning the next Art Happening soon. Drop by if you get a chance. You don’t to be an artist, rather just enjoy art. An Art Happening is one of the best ways to get out and about in Sevierville.

First Baptist Church Corn Maze 2016: An October Gift to Sevierville

img_6748

The First Baptist Church of Sevierville is producing one of the biggest events that I have seen by any church for any community. They had over 8,000 guests last year. It should break that record this year.

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Love Loud Corn Maze! It is one massive, fun, fall afternoon. Take the family and a good camera. I was pretty amazed.

  • Free parking and free admission
  • Free games
  • Free entertainment
  • Free food ( hot dogs, cookies, ice water, flavored ices, and popcorn).
  • Free hayrides
  • Free marshmallow toasting
  • and more…

Parking is not a problem. There is a massive gravel lot. The property, across the street from the city park, is over 40 acres. They are using most of that property to share their love with the community this month—and you can feel it. Here is what I saw.

img_7471

Hot chili dogs.

img_7473

The slingshot game used great precision and was quite popular. Even bigger than it looks here.

img_7534

Animals for the kids to look at. Goats on high.

I only walked around the corn maze and was there about an hour and a half. If you go to do everything then you can have quite a good evening there. It would be nice to get there as the sun sets because there will be bonfires, toasting marshmallows, and even more fun.

It was an impressive, organized fall festival and I could feel the love. I felt like I was a guest in the Lord’s house. When I got home, I looked for the map to take a picture for this blog.

img_7530

You can see the scope of the First Baptist Church Corn Maze by the map. I didn’t even make it into the maze, but it looks like a massive one. In fact, I only noticed the design of the maze when I came home this evening. Needing a picture, I turned over the map and noticed the intricate design of the maze. I’ll let it speak for itself.

img_7531

A wonderful way to get out and about this month. You will be impressed.

United Way of Sevier County Presents 2nd Annual First Responders Challenge 2016, (Part 2)

The maze trail is contained within a large truck. The contestants do not know anything about the inside design and it is completely dark. And small spaces! I could see how they bump their helmets on walls and things. I believe the event is timed. To me, this would be the hardest thing of all the events!

Look at the small opening in the bottom right. Very small. Full gear and oxygen tanks add more weight too.

Officer Akers works out at my gym. I asked why he wasn’t competing, but he said that he was scheduled to work. If he competes next year then look out because he works out hard at NFC.

Part of the Shults family outside the Sevier County High School stadium. I think that the sign above applies well to them. My friend Darlene is pictured in the cranberry color. Event Chairman, John Matthews, is pictured to the far right.

Have you ever seen anyone pulling a fire truck loaded with 1,000 gallons of water?

Timed event. Must pull to cones. Coach Hutchens calling the times!

sam_1005A tough team here too!

I had to leave soon after the fire truck pull due to an appointment, but will make sure that I can stay until the end next year. This looked very interesting. A huge container of water with a ladder across the top.

In conclusion, the theme of the day was ‘overcoming obstacles.‘ Justin Shults wrote about overcoming obstacles in his life as an essay topic when he applied for a scholarship. First responders overcome obstacles every day. The United Way of Sevier County helps to fund over 15 community groups to help others overcome obstacles. It was a common thread throughout the day.

I ended my visit on an uplifting note. It was a good moment to see the Shults family honoring Justin and Stephanie Shults.

It is obvious that our community loves this family.

Our community also loves Justin and Stephanie.

In honor of them.
